Have a Mint

MintMany of you have heard about the money management site Mint. I have been using it for roughly two years now and love it. It has most of the useful features of Intuit’s Quicken and Microsoft Money, but is free and accessible from anywhere.

Functions you would expect such as a transaction register and spending charts are present but there are a few extras that are worth noting. The first is activity alerts. Mint allows you to set alerts for a number of different events that may occur in your accounts such as low balances or unusual spending. These events can be delivered by either an email or a text message.

Another feature is the “Ways to Save” tool. This tool can automatically analyze your checking, savings, credit cards, CDs or brokerage account activity for current interest rates, account fees, etc. ane compare them to a wide range of other banks and financial institutions to see if you are getting the most out of your money.

One of the most useful feature is budgeting. You can quickly set monthly limits on any spending category and as the month progresses your totals are automatically figured.

There is also a companion iPhone app which I must admit leaves something to be desired. Much of the functionality is absent in this app but is still useful for quickly checking your budgets as well and viewing any alerts you may have set.

If you are looking for a great, easy way to get a better handle on your finances I highly recommend using Mint.
